Sitting and standing at a wedding - what to do when
1. When the bride arrives
When the bridal party arrives, everyone stands. This is very traditional and many couples are opting not to do this. If you do opt for this, this can either be done at the start of the bridesmaid’s entry or just before the bride’s grand entrance. Hot tip - it does make it easier for guests to see the bride if they are standing. The celebrant will tell you to be seated once the couples meet at the end of the aisle together.
2. Signing the marriage certificate
At many weddings, this is the prime time for everyone to have a field day and head to the front of the room to get their #perfectwedding photo for their gram. While it’s nice for all your guests to get their shots, it’s sometimes nicer to have everyone stay in their seats. This will also make things easier for the photographer to get the shots they need without having to weave through guests.
Generally throughout the signing, the bride and groom will sit and the witnesses will stand either side, along with the celebrant.
3. For the introduction of the newly wed couple
After the documents are signed, the celebrant will introduce the couple by their chosen married names for the first time, before they make their way back up the aisle. This is where all the guests can stand up, throw confetti, shake hands with the newest family member and go in for all of the hugs before photos.
4. At the start of the reception
After the bridal party have had their photos, the MC will give an official welcome to the couple as they enter. This is another opportunity to give a standing welcome.
5. Whenever the bride wants
The bride is likely going to be wearing heels all day. While she’s doing laps of at the reception, meeting long lost cousins and new family, for goodness sake, offer her your chair to rest her poor little tootsies.
